The Edge on Brickell

Brickell — 55 SW Miami Avenue Road, Miami

The Edge on Brickell was designed for a sliver of land on the Miami River known locally as Big Fish — barely a third of an acre, with 300 feet of river frontage. The plan called for a fifty-seven story, 631-foot building holding 130 residences at three to a floor, with private boat access from the heart of Brickell's urban core. The development team was Rafael Aragonés and Alberto Espinosa, and Aragonés developed the design.

A 600-foot illuminated glass mural by the Dutch artist Jan Hendrix was to run the height of the building — what most people would have seen of it from the river. Behind that, residences were drawn between 1,321 and 2,271 square feet with expansive open layouts and private terraces reached from both living rooms and bedrooms, specified to a LEED Silver rating.

The condominium was not built. The parcel sold in 2015, and later proposals for the site have leaned toward a hotel-led project. The location argument is unchanged: the financial district, the Design District, Wynwood, Midtown and South Beach all close at hand, with Biscayne Bay immediately downstream.
